Jason Newsted has revealed that he was treated for throat cancer in May 2025 after doctors found the disease in his tonsil area.
The former Metallica bassist said the cancer was detected early and removed through laser surgery. He later received an update from doctors confirming that he was free and clear.
Newsted said the health issue led him to change several parts of his daily routine. He now rests more and has stopped using alcohol and marijuana.
The musician also described the diagnosis as a serious reminder to pay attention to health concerns and medical checkups.
Newsted was a member of Metallica from 1986 to 2001, following the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He played on several of the band’s major releases, including And Justice for All, Metallica, Load and Reload.
He has continued making music since leaving the group, including work with his own projects.
Jason Newsted & the Chophouse Band are scheduled to play live dates during the summer.
